I am a pregnant woman concerned about the rise in Autism. I know of three different families with children who have been diagnosed with Autism and I can’t help but wonder why are there so many more Autistic children these days. For those of you who children with the disease or know parents of Autistic children – what is Autism attributed to?

Many are attributing Autism to vaccines but there seems to be alot of controversy about this theory. What does everyone think?

My baby boy lost his speech and lines things up, rocks and bangs head and stares at wheels on cars. He never responds to his name. We are starting Early Intervention therapy. Just wanted opinions on what you think causes autism. He did have a bad reaction to the MMR vaccine. I am considering not having any more vaccines for him. He is do again in September for vaccines and I might refuse them.

We have three grandchildren, all born from different siblings, that have been diagnosed with autism. My husband was in VietNam and this seems to be the only thing that is different from my sister and her family and how they have not been affected. I know that they talk about vaccinations having a connection, but could there be a connection with the vaccines that the soldiers received before leaving the country?

My daughter is due to have her mmr vaccine in 3 weeks. My husband and I had decided that we were going to have the vaccine separated. When my husband spoke to the dr today to tell her that we were planning on separating the shot, she went on to tell him that there is no proof that the mmr vaccine causes autism and told him that the vaccines are now thimerosol free. She managed to change his mind and now he doesn’t think that we need to separate the vaccine. I don’t know what to do. I fully intend on giving her the vaccine I just don’t know whether or not I should separate it or give her the 3in1. What would or did you do with your child? What are your opinions on this subject? Thank you in advance.

My son is 8 months and will be going for his 9 month check up and shots soon and I am getting more and more concerned about autism being possibly linked to vaccines. Which vaccines am I okay to stay away from and which ones are maybe considered safer??? My doctor doesn’t seem to think there is a link so isn’t helpful…

Thats almost as bad as the “refrigerator mother” theory of Bettelheim’s, but at least Bettelheim’s theories have since been thoroughly debunked. Why is it proving to be so difficult to debunk the whole “vaccinations CAUSE autism” myth, especially when all credible scientists believe that autism has an exclusively genetic basis? and yet there are plenty of people who seem to be convinced of the validity of this type of “data”. Why? Wouldn’t it be a far more interesting question to ask why only some children seem to be affected by vaccines, and not others? Maybe there is something involved in these vaccines, but I don’t think it has anything specifically to do with autism.
Aspergerskitty, I’m not a “she”, but other than that, I appreciate the rest of what you wrote. I’m going to wait just a little while longer before choosing a Best Answer on this one.

If it’s not vaccines, is it the water kids drink, the food they eat, poor diet, what? What’s your spin on it? Also, does anyone know when symptoms generally become apparent? This issue is freaking me out.
