I would like to take a test to see if my child has Autism. Not just a warning sign bullet page. I know it is out there somewhere.

A diagnosis shouldn’t be made through a online test, a diagnosis should be made by a medical professional.

If you’re concerned about symptoms I recommend reviewing the CDC website, for Learn the Signs, Act Early

The only issues that I have with this document is that it doesn’t clearly define that there are other conditions, with a genetic basis, that are often misdiagnosed as autism.

When looking for answers, a visit to a genetic counselor is a must even when you see no link to family inheritance, some conditions may silently lurk in a family for generations.

There is no online test to diagnose a child (or adult) with autism. There are online screeners and articles with “bullet points,” like you’ve said… but a diagnosis must be made by a trained mental health professional.
I’m a psychologist who works in this area… I would encourage you to talk with your child’s pediatrician and teachers to start with, and then ask for referrals for a psychologist. In some states, you can obtain this kind of testing for free… in other states, you will need to have it either covered by your health insurance or pay for it out of pocket.

Update: The poster below, Melody, gave a link to what looks like a good screening tool. However, I just want to emphasize that when you go see a mental health professional, he or she not only interviews you, but also observers your child. So, answering questions is only part of the evaluation. Your child must be observed in order for a correct diagnosis to be made… otherwise, doctors could just give an interview and diagnosis over the phone.

There is an assessment online that you can answer for. You have to be honest with your answers. These are the same questions that a developmental pediatrician or a neurologist would ask you.

The outcome may be different when you take it online to when you answer the questions with a doctor. The reason for this is that on this assessment, you don’t have a real basis of comparison. When you speak with a doctor, you will be able to explain more in depth and they will know more accurately which category your child falls in.

Nonetheless, it gives a good starting point. It at least gives you means to understanding your child more until you can get to see an actual professional. It’s at Childbrain.com.
