My son has been diagnosed with autism and adhd. The older he gets, the more impulsive and hyperactive he becomes. It is often hard to deal with him, especially in public, because of his behavior. He is receiving Occupational Therapy once a week in school, and will also be receiving an additional hour of outside OT soon. He is not currently on medication, as the neurologists have told me that a lot of meds that work for ADHD have adverse effects in kids with autism. Plus I am nervous about the effects they may have on him. We tried Focalin for a while, which had no benefit and even seemed to make him more aggressive. He is also on a gluten free-casein free diet. Any informative suggestions would be appreciated.

I have found a lot of information about disabilities in general (IDEA of 1997, ect) but I really need autism-specific information. I am going to college to become a teacher, so I applied for a paraprofessional position at an elemenatry school. I was hired, and it turns out that the job is child specific, for a boy with autism. I will be helping him throughout the day at his special, learning support class, lunch, recess, etc. It seems like something I will be able to handle, but I need some pointers on working with autism. My six year old son is Autistic. He only parrots what we say sometimes… We moved to Mooresville, NC from Birmingham, AL and he went to school for about 2 months in NC. When he was at the school in AL he did good! Now that we are here he is not doing so well… He has regressed. Does anyone have a child with Autism, and know of a good state with good schools? My son is the most important thing to me and I know that he can learn. He just needs someone that cares about teaching to help him along the way.
